Professor
Business Strategy
Giannis Spanos is Professor of Business Strategy in the Department of Theatre Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (May 2024–). His current academic interests focus on the study of the role of management and strategy in theatre organisations and, more broadly, in the cultural industries. His book entitled Management and Strategy in the Arts and Culture was recently published by Papazisis Publications. In addition, he teaches at the Hellenic Open University (as a member of the Adjunct Teaching Staff) courses in Business and Organisation Management (Strategic Management, Multinational Enterprise Management, Organisational Behaviour, Project Management). He has authored a book entitled Introduction to Innovation, published and used by the Hellenic Open University, as well as teaching notes for the course Strategy & Innovation for the Athens University of Economics and Business.
Before moving to the University of Athens, he served (2001–2024) as Professor of Business Strategy in the Department of Management Science and Technology at the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) — since February 2021 as Full Professor. At AUEB he taught Strategy & Innovation, Management, and Organisational Theory at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.
His academic interests during his tenure at AUEB focused on innovation, strategy and competitiveness, and organisational change. He has published articles in major international academic journals such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Research Policy, Technovation, and R&D Management, among others. His published research has received (until recently) more than 1,145 citations in ISI Web of Knowledge, 1,695 in Scopus, and 4,625 in Google Scholar.
He serves as reviewer for international academic journals such as Research Policy, Organization Studies (on whose Editorial Board he also served during 2006–2008), Journal of Management Studies, Technovation, and others.
Alongside his academic and research activities, Giannis Spanos has participated in a large number of projects directly related to his research interests, many of which have been funded by the European Union. Finally, during the period 1995–2010 he worked as external consultant and participated actively in the activities of the Hellenic Innovation Relay Centre, which, as part of the network of corresponding European Centres, aimed to support innovation and technology transfer for European small and medium-sized enterprises.
