EXAMS - ASSIGNMENTS

Exams - Assignments - Diploma Thesis

This page presents the main rules concerning course attendance, examinations, assignments, grading, diploma thesis preparation and the award of the MA degree.

Attendance and examinations

Attendance is compulsory and participation in examinations depends on successful attendance of the course.

Assessment methods

Student performance may be assessed through written or oral exams, assignments, coursework or combinations of these methods.

Diploma thesis

The MA degree is completed with the successful submission and defence of an individual and original postgraduate thesis.

Academic Semesters and Attendance

Academic year structure
There are two semesters in each academic year, the fall semester and the spring semester. Each semester consists of thirteen (13) weeks of teaching and three (3) weeks of examinations. Courses of both semesters are re-examined during the September examination period.
Compulsory attendance
Attendance of courses, workshops and related academic activities is compulsory. A postgraduate student is considered eligible to sit examinations only if they have attended at least 70% of the course hours.
Missed attendance
If attendance is below the required threshold, the student must attend the course again in the following academic year.
Excessive absences
If absences exceed 30% of the total number of courses, the student may be subject to withdrawal, following examination of the case by the competent Board and recommendation to the Department Assembly.

Assessment and Grading

The assessment method for each course is determined by the lecturer and may include written or oral examinations, assignments throughout the semester, mid-term tests, laboratory or clinical exercises, or a combination of these.
Assessment methods
Assessment may be based on written or oral examinations, semester assignments, progress tests, written coursework, laboratory or clinical exercises, or a combination of all of the above.
Integrity of assessment
In written or oral examinations, the integrity of the process must be ensured. Alternative methods, including written or oral assessment through electronic means, may be used in exceptional circumstances or force majeure, provided that the impartiality and reliability of the process are guaranteed.
Special educational needs
Alternative assessment methods may also be applied for students with significant cognitive disabilities or special educational needs, following the competent decision-making process and the relevant guidelines of the Accessibility Unit.
Grading scale
Grading is based on a scale from 1 to 10.
Announcement of results
Examination results are announced by the lecturer and sent to the Secretariat of the MA and the Department within four (4) weeks at the latest after the examination of the course.
Failed courses
Courses in which a student has not obtained a passing grade must be repeated. However, independently graded laboratory or exercise components are retained and do not need to be repeated if attendance in them was successful.
Grade correction
Correction of a grade is permitted only in cases of obvious omission or cumulative error, following a written statement by the lecturer and a decision of the Department Assembly.
Retention of examination papers
Examination papers are kept for two (2) years under the responsibility of the person in charge of the course, unless criminal, disciplinary or other administrative proceedings are pending.

Degree Classification and ECTS

Degree calculation
The final degree grade is calculated on the basis of the weight of each course in the curriculum, expressed through its ECTS credits.
ECTS requirement
In order to obtain the Master’s degree, each postgraduate student must successfully complete all compulsory courses, the required number of elective courses and the postgraduate thesis, accumulating a total of 120 ECTS.
Degree classification
The MA degree indicates a grade to two decimal places, according to the following scale: Excellent (8.5 to 10), Very Good (6.5 to 8.5 not including) and Good (5 to 6.5 not including).

MA Thesis

The assignment of the MA Thesis takes place after the successful completion of all courses of the programme.
Nature of the thesis
The MA Thesis must be individual, original, research-based and written according to the writing guidelines posted on the MA website.
Assignment procedure
Following a student request indicating the proposed title, supervisor and abstract, the Coordinating Committee appoints the thesis supervisor and forms the three-member examination committee, one member of which is the supervisor.
Language
The language of the thesis may be either English or Greek and is specified together with the definition of the topic.
Finalisation of title
The title of the thesis may be finalised after an application by the student and agreement of the supervisor, subject to approval by the Coordinating Committee.
Defence
In order to be approved, the thesis must be defended before the three-member examination committee.
Repository submission
Approved postgraduate theses are obligatorily uploaded to the Digital Repository PERGAMOS, in accordance with the decisions of the Senate of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
Unpublished original results
If the thesis contains original unpublished results, only the abstract may be published initially, upon request of the supervisor and co-signature of the postgraduate student, while the full text may be published later.

Award of the MA Degree

Completion of studies
A student completes the studies required for the award of the Master’s Degree (MA) by successfully completing the required courses and credits and by successfully completing the postgraduate thesis. The Department Assembly formally determines the completion of studies.
Certificate of completion
Upon completion of the procedure, the postgraduate student is issued a certificate of completion of studies, loses student status and ceases to participate in the collective bodies of University administration.
Graduation ceremony
The graduation oath is not constitutive of the successful completion of studies, but it is a necessary condition for the award of the title. The ceremony takes place within the framework of the Assembly of the Faculty/Department of Theatre Studies.
Degree title
Within the framework of the programme, a Master’s Degree is awarded in “Greek and World Theatre: Drama, Performance, Education”.
